New CEO takes the reins at Bell

10 August 2010

Following the announcement of his appointment earlier this year, Greg Watson has this week taken up his new role as Chief Executive of the Bell Educational Trust.

Greg joins Bell from OCR (Oxford Cambridge & RSA Examinations), which he led as Chief Executive from 2004. Under Greg's leadership, OCR has become the second largest provider of A levels and GCSEs in the UK and a major provider of vocational and skills-based qualifications for young people and adults.

Greg joined OCR on its formation in 1998, spending three years as its first Marketing & Sales Director before becoming Deputy Chief Executive in 2001.

He graduated in modern languages from Queens' College, Cambridge, in 1987, following a degree programme which included a year teaching English in Germany. Before joining OCR, he worked for ten years in the oil industry in retail and business-to-business sectors, covering marketing, business development, IT systems development and quality management.

Announcing the appointment earlier this year, Ellen Fleming, Chair of the Bell Educational Trust, commented: "We are delighted to welcome someone with such an impressive pedigree to lead the Trust into the next phase of its development. We have embarked upon an ambitious programme of organisational growth and Greg's commercial skills, coupled with his absolute commitment to quality, will be an essential ingredient in our future success and represent a perfect fit with the Bell brand."

Beginning his first week in charge, Greg said: "I'm thrilled to be taking the reins of such a well respected and successful organisation and one which has been at the forefront of its sector for over half a century.

“With an unrivalled reputation for excellence in English language teaching and teacher training, Bell has a huge contribution to make to meeting the ever increasing global demand for top-class English language skills.

“Of course, that reputation has been hard-won and one of the things that has always set Bell apart is the quality of its people, so I'm really looking forward to getting to know the Bell team and working with them to keep Bell at the forefront of English language teaching and learning."
